SAIVA “Participant Members” (the seniors) get a meaningful opportunity to come together in a weekly activity at the Asian American Resource Center. Here, members hand-make muslin fabric “Therapy Dolls”, knitted baby blankets, knitted baby hats, and knitted mittens, which are gifted to the patients at Dell Children's Hospital.
SAIVA’s mission with our Food Prep Program is to allow seniors to engage in a communal activity, while at the same time offering families across the greater Austin area fresh chopped, ready-to-cook vegetables. This program aims to help seniors without the means of transportation to get to the store for fresh veggies, or a person who is home-bound due to an illness, or working mothers who appreciate the convenience.
SAIVA hosts two major fundraisers per year: once in the Fall and once in the Spring. These events are an opportunity to generate additional revenue in order to fund the various programs and give back to the local community.
SAIVA also occasionally hosts other programs such as Therapy Dolls, Lunch & Learn, and AARC talks. Recently, making Face Masks has become a program due to the COVID-19 crisis. These events differ based on the time of year and circumstances and are intended to give members and volunteers chances to bond and interact while performing services for the greater good.
Ma-Dada fosters and encourages intergenerational engagement between SAIVA senior members and members of younger generations. SAIVA engages the South Asian workforce in volunteer opportunities where they can participate themselves, or they can invite their spouses and children to engage with the SAIVA senior members. This program allows young families to bond with the seniors, and creates community and “family” for young families, who join in on various activities.
Stress is a response to challenges in life, and a life without challenges is too boring to contemplate. At these sessions, experts instruct others on how to enjoy some great informational content on relevant topics in exercise, nutrition, and wellness! SAIVA promotes and provides logistical support for these events.
Be the Change (BTC) Austin is an annual national day of service coordinated to inspire and foster civic engagement through volunteerism and community service, based on Gandhi's famous quote to "Be the change you wish to see in the world." SAIVA encourages participation and provides logistical support for this event.
